Dionysos ist der Gott, der erscheint. Seine Ankunft, seine Parusie kann man in den verschiedensten Gestalten und Masken verfolgen. So ist sein Kultbild oft eine Maske, die an Bäumen aufgehängt wird; er taucht als ein hölzernes Gesicht aus dem Meer auf; er erscheint als junges Mädchen, als Stier, als Löwe, als Leopard…Doch wie soll man ihn erkennen, seine Masken durchschauen, sein wahres Wesen realisieren? Und wenn unter der Maske wieder eine Maske zum Vorschein kommt?

Damit ist Dionysos paradigmatisch der Gott der Metamorphose, der unzähligen Verwandlungen der an Metamorphosen so reichen griechischen Götterwelt.

Dionysus is the god who appears. His arrival, his parousia, can be traced in a wide variety of forms and masks. His cult image is often a mask hung on trees; he emerges from the sea as a wooden face; he appears as a young girl, a bull, a lion, a leopard... But how can one recognize him, see through his masks, realize his true nature? And what if another mask appears beneath the mask?

This makes Dionysus paradigmatically the god of metamorphosis, of the countless transformations of the Greek pantheon, which is so rich in metamorphoses.
