The figure at the top left of the picture is looking somewhat questioningly at a strange structure, while a large blue flower can be seen in the lower part. It is
reminiscent of the "blue flower" of Romanticism, especially in No-valis. The blue flower symbolises the quest for knowledge of nature and the self, the ultimate goal of Romanticism. The strange shape
at the top right could be associated with an abstract one-eyed figure, e.g. the giant Polyphemus, whose cave Odysseus only escapes from with a trick. The price for this, however, is his famous
ten-year odyssey, the account of which is one of the great tales of mankind. The blue flower in my watercolour would therefore be a treasure that is only found, if at all, after long trials and
tribulations.
I see it as an allegory of art in general and of the artistic creative process in particular.
"Life is a boy playing, playing a board game. The boy's (is the) kingdom." (Heraclitus)
Nietzsche speaks in a fragment in relation to Heraclitus' thinking and in particular to the "playing world child":
"The eternally living fire...plays, builds and destroys...that opposition can only be grasped as an artistic phenomenon. It is a purely aesthetic view of the world.
And just as the child and the artist play, the eternally living fire plays, builds and destroys, in innocence - and the Aeon plays this game with itself. Transforming itself into water and earth, it
piles up and destroys; from time to time it starts the game all over again...
Only the aesthetic man looks at the world in this way who has experienced in the artist and in the creation of the work of art how the conflict of multiplicity can nevertheless bear within itself law
and justice, how the artist stands contemplatively above and active in the work of art, how necessity and play, conflict and harmony must combine to produce the work of art."
In meinem Werk kontrastiere ich Altes mit Neuem, Gegenständliches mit Abstraktem, Triviales mit High Culture, Malerei mit Collage, Natur mit Kultur. „Let’s mix all feelings together!“.
In my work, I contrast the old with the new, the figurative with the abstract, the trivial with high culture, painting with collage, nature with culture. "Let's mix all feelings together!". It is in the nature of collage to first destroy the original contexts in order to then place them in a new, fragile context. Through collaging, the image sources partially lose their original meaning and gain new unforeseen and unpredictable contexts of meaning.
This also results in an ethic of becoming and metamorphoses.
Every collage has a playful moment of chance.
But my work is not just a game. It thematises certain aspects of our more than 2000-year-old culture itself.
